Did You Know? Mobility Scooters Are Treated as Pedestrians in SA

12 October 2026

Did you know that in South Australia, mobility scooter and wheelchair users are treated as pedestrians under the road rules?

That means the usual pedestrian rules generally apply. Where a footpath or nature strip is available, that is usually where the scooter should be used. Mobility scooters and wheelchairs should not be ridden in bike lanes, and road crossings should be made using pedestrian or traffic lights where available.

It is also important to remember that being treated as a pedestrian does not mean having priority over everyone else on the footpath. Mobility scooter users should travel carefully, slow down when needed, and give way to people on foot, especially in narrow areas, near shops, around doorways, and anywhere foot traffic is busy.

If there is no usable footpath, the rules also provide guidance about travelling at the edge of the road and facing oncoming traffic where practical.

And while 10 km/h may be the legal maximum for many scooters, that does not always mean it is the safe speed. It is always best to slow down to suit the path, surroundings and other people nearby.
